When to change your estate plan

Creating an estate plan is important for individuals and families. Creating an estate plan does not have to be a difficult process, especially when working with an experienced attorney. But for many, it is a relief to have the process complete and necessary protections in place.

However, once your estate plan is complete, it is important to make sure it is kept current. When life circumstances change, it may become necessary to revise your estate plan.

Going through certain life events and changes may necessitate a change to your estate plan. Here are some of those reasons:

Changes in your family:

  • Remarriage
  • Divorce
  • Death of a spouse or close family member
  • Birth or adoption of a child or grandchild
  • Change in number of dependants
  • Change in beneficiaries

Changes in employment:

  • Starting a business
  • Ending a business
  • Job promotion or salary increase
  • Adding names to a family business

Changes in finances:

  • Purchasing a home
  • Borrowing a significant amount of money
  • Change in value of investments (either increase or decrease)
  • Receiving a large financial gift

Other life events:

  • Moving out of state
  • Change in tax laws
  • If an executor or trustee is no longer able to fulfill his or her duties

If you have gone through significant personal, familial or job changes, you should consider revising your estate plan. This does not have to be a difficult or lengthy process.

The attorneys at Korshak & Associates, P.A., can review your estate plan and help you determine if revisions are necessary. To schedule a consultation at our office in Casselberry or Orlando, please call 407-917-6786.
